The inevitable Sex and the City post part 1 - history
I am/was a huge fan of the Sex and the City television series. Before you start making judgements about me based on that statement, let me clarify my position. I really love watching the show. I love what a love letter to New York City it is. There are certain episodes I could watch over and over. I did not, however base any part of my life on that show. It was just a television show. One that entertained me a great deal. I never expressed how I was ‘just like’ any of the gals. Of course, there were things I connected with in all of the characters, just as in many shows I like. I never wore a shirt that says “I’m a Miranda”. I didn’t start drinking Cosmopolitans because Carrie and the gang did. I liked the taste of vodka, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry before Mr. Big was ever on my television screen. I didn’t run out and buy Manolos. You get the picture. I just really liked the show.
In my unpopular opinion, I felt that the way they ended the series was a little bit of a sell-out. This show was about 4 single gals in The City. Of course I didn’t expect for the series to end with ALL of them still being single, but I hated how they ALL ended up in a serious relationship (two of them married). I felt it was kind of throwing out the entire message of the show that it was ok to be single and happy and fulfilled at any age. In fact, we ended with 4 women who seemed to be defined by the relationships they were in with their respective men. The thing that bothered me most was having Mr. Big gallop on over to Paris on his white horse and save Carrie from the big, bad Russian. Booo. Shame. After EVERYTHING that Big had put our heroine through, he winds up being the hero. I don’t see why Carrie had to be saved at all. She seemed to handle herself well. She realized she was not going to find happiness with Alexandr and so she ended it and decided to go home. To her City. To her friends, who had become her family. I would have loved that ending so much more. Alas, we had to wrap up the fairy tale with the Princess being swept away by the Prince.
And now, they were coming to the big screen. Stay tuned for my reaction to the movie.
